MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

The existing One Health challenges are multifactorial, and the effective tackling of these challenges is frequently impaired by the traditional siloed approach of working in isolation in the public health, animal health and environment sectors. The current One Health workforce is not adequately positioned and prepared to work across the human-animal-environment interface. In this light, there have been demands on establishing One Health Field Epidemiology programs that will train the health workforce in detecting, controlling, and preventing diseases, using the One Health approaches. The OHI works toward establishing the One Health Field Epidemiology (OHFE) Mentorship Program in response to the urgent and growing need for strengthening collaborative efforts among public, animal, and environmental health, as well as food safety and security. With this program, the OHI aims to empower training participants to effectively collaborate across various sectors in combatting emerging infectious diseases and other evolving challenges. The program equips participants with the essential systems thinking skills required for implementing the One Health approach. In this effort, the OHI closely adheres to the Guidance for One Health field epidemiology mentorship. This guidance serves as a supplemental manual to the Competencies for One Health field epidemiology (COHFE) framework, which was jointly developed by the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the World Organization for Animal Health:
