Commentary regarding the article

The OHI has played one of the key roles in a multi-institutional collaborative project aimed at investigating the genetic diversity and evolutionary mechanisms driving divergence in the Georgian Mountain Breed (GMB) of Bos taurus. The findings from this research were recently published in the Journal of Genetic Resources.

“This pioneering study offers critical initial insights into the phylogenetic status and evolutionary divergence mechanisms of GMB from the Caucasus region. It highlights broad populations of this breed from the Khevsureti and Ajara regions of Georgia. I hypothesize that the GMB may be among the oldest cattle breeds globally, with its gene pool providing significant potential for preservation and conservation. Such efforts could make important contributions to Georgian agriculture, particularly in the context of ongoing global warming, and also foster the development of ecotourism in our country," stated Dr. Mamuka Kotetishvili, Director of the OHI.
