A team of young researchers from the in silico Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Proteomics (LFGP) from OHI presented their findings during a scientific workshop co-organized with GNHI. The event took place on October 24, 2024, in Tbilisi, Georgia, at the GNHI meeting room.
Researchers Megi Tsereteli and Lilia Jimsherishvili discussed their study on specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and mobile genetic elements, such as prophages and insertion sequences (ISs), that are collectively found across the genomes of several isolates of Brucella abortus isolated in Georgia. Investigator Saba Kobakhidze presented unique genetic features of two Staphylococcus aureus strains from Wuhan, China, mirroring partly several genetic loci of Equus caballus (domestic horse) and Mus musculus (house mouse).
Both studies were initiated by Dr. Mamuka Kotetishvili, the Director of OHI, while he was previously associated with GNHI. Attendees from both institutes strongly supported the findings of these studies and advocated for their continued research: Gaining deeper insights into the above genetic features and evolution of B. abortus and S. aureus is expected to contribute to effective control and prevention measures against infections caused by these significant pathogens, both locally and globally.
